New York, Here I Come!

New York, Here I Come!

I am off to New York tomorrow, leaving the Greek God(zilla) with the solo parenting gig for 6 whole days.

Oh yes, did I forget to mention that I am off to NYC tomorrow ALL BY MYSELF?!  Well, not by myself as in actually by myself.  I am travelling with a friend and we will be staying with another, but this is the longest time I will have ever been away from my family.

This in itself has taken more planning and organising than your average world leadership summit.

When the Greek God(zilla) was in Davos earlier this year, he simply informed me he would be going, booked a ticket and packed a bag.  The same process will no doubt apply when he travels to Brazil for the World Cup later this year.

Before I booked my ticket, I first had to make sure that the Greek God(zilla) thought it was his idea and then agree to work from home for a couple of days to cover the school run.

Then, I had to go through the calendar and check for any father/son social conflicts.  In the event of a diary clash that could not be resolved, I called in the cavalry – his sisters.

Our son’s presence is required at a couple of kids birthday parties on Saturday.  Yep, TWO parties in one day.

Now, this is not usually an exercise I would encourage a rookie on the kids party circuit to attempt.  Two lots of cake.  Two party bags.  Twice the sugar high/crash.  Double the meltdown potential.

I have briefed him as best I can on school gate lingo, but my husband has absolutely no filter when it comes to saying exactly what is on his mind, so this could really go one of several ways… *has flashbacks*

I will just make sure that the birthday gifts I purchase, wrap and set out on the table later today, have a big sign and arrow pointing to them that reads DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE PRESENT TO PARTY and are thoughtful enough to forgive any minor slip of the tongue.

Or, we can just move.

However, it is not the childcare arrangements and party prepping that has taken all the time.

It is the manual I have had to produce on what happens, how it happens, and when it happens.

Like, the way the morning routine follows a step-by-step programme – miss a step, or even worse, move an item to somewhere else on the schedule and you will still be scrabbling over coats, shoes and book bags while somewhere in the distance a bell is ringing.

Reminders to brush teeth after breakfast and before bed.

Instructions for reading practice and how to access Mathletics.

Suggestions for activities, mealtimes and attire.

Tips on how to wash hair without incurring ‘the rage’.

All of which will be ignored, of course.

Routines will be discarded, rules will be broken, and they will both be run ragged.

They are going to have an absolute ball!

    Sounds amazing!

Always frustrates me the kind of measures I have to go to, too before a trip away or weekend with friend… and like the Godzilla, husband has greater freedom to announce trips/ go off if he needs to.

Well that’s changing over here too!

Great to hear it’s not just me who speaks her mind sometimes too freely and before thinking (must be a Greek thing). Have a ball yourself gorgeous!

Enjoy babe! Have a ball. (When I last went away, I too thought my guidelines would be ignored, but apparently The Husband could be seen in the playground clutching my carefully typed crib sheet and regularly checking it with angst!!) xx
