Aphrodite’s Cyprus

The Greek God(zilla)’s mother is originally from Crete and his father is from Cyprus. However he was born and raised on another big island – only Britain is a little bit colder – in a house just a few doors away from the one where his parents first met. Legend has it that the Greek God(zilla)’s dad had imagined his wife-to-be in a dream, and when he first set eyes on her at a mutual friend’s house party, he literally went weak at the knees. Although they made the decision to raise their 3 children in London, they remained close to their families in Crete and Cyprus. We have visited Crete many times.  Our son has felt Cretan sand between his toes, and paddled in the Med.  The Greek God(zilla)’s family, in the mountain village of Selia, have welcomed us into their homes and plied us with tiropita and raki.  This made us feel rather weak at the knees. We have enjoyed some wonderful holidays there and have fond memories of long days spent on …

Alone Time

Although we’ve been home for only 2-weeks , our Greek island holiday seems like a distant memory now that I am back at work and we are attempting to get back into a routine. I’ll always cherish those weeks with you, where each day was ours to do with as we pleased. No work or nursery to get up for, no schedule to keep, no routine to follow. We got to spend so much time together while he slept. We watched movies in bed and cuddled up tight. We went for long walks, hung out on the beach and swam in the pool. It’s been so long since we had that much time together, just you and me. I’ve missed you. We talked a lot about your favourite books, places we wanted to visit and what food to eat. As he stirred from slumber, we giggled to ourselves. Our calm was about to become chaos once more. We’d soon all be running around the apartment hunting down missing trunks, sunscreen and hats. He’d probably be …

Where’s Woody’s Hat?

Remember when you were young and went on holiday with your mates and spent 2-weeks sunning yourself on the beach or lounging by the pool, and you’d stay up drinking and chatting all night long and sleep all day? Every day was yours to do with as you pleased and if all the fun and relaxation got too much, well you could just take off on a whim to another unexplored corner of the island. There was always a catchphrase of the holiday, a private in-joke that never grows old, but only those present at the time will ever understand or laugh along with. Yeah… our holiday was not like that. There was not much sunning of oneself or lounging.  On the beach, we were required to remain upright in order to repeatedly fill buckets with seawater and build sandcastles. There was not much opportunity to recline at the pool with a 3-year old who insisted on running on the slippery concrete floor and once persuaded into the water, needed our backs to provide the horse …

Farewell Crete

We are back from our holiday in Crete now and I can honestly say, it has been one of the best we have had.  It has had moments of chaos and moments of crazy but we have relaxed and we have chatted and we have rested and we have laughed to the point where we have had tears rolling down our faces and stitches in our sides.  We have also stuffed our faces with so much meat, that my thighs are now the size of two Cretan mountains and my belly could shade the entire south side of the island. I cannot publish a photo of my thighs, I am too ashamed, so enjoy this pair I found earlier instead… On one particularly gorgeous day in Plakias with the Syrpis-Novitz Griwi family and friends, we hung out on the beach and swam in the sea while the other Griwi twins, Kris & Alex, took turns to read stories to Zachy and take him into the water. A particularly gorgeous long lunch to celebrate Philip & Tonia’s …

BB has landed

The Greek God(zilla)’s sister, BB, arrived in Crete on Sunday morning with her boyfriend, Rob. I have met Rob once before, at Greek Easter and was intrigued to find out more about his intentions towards my sister-in-law him. We discovered over pina coladas, Mythos & 4 bottles of red wine a quiet drink, that he runs his own business, has written a book and flies planes in his spare time… I know, you’re thinking what a loser, right? Don’t worry, he also LOVES karaoke. AND, is good with 2-year olds… So much so, that Zachy has taken to asking for ‘Big Rob’ to take him into the sea, ‘Big Rob’ to take him for a walk, ‘Big Rob’ to read his Igglepiggle book to him.  Over and Over.  And over again. The Greek God(zilla) and I have never taken it so easy! I even went so far as to declare Rob this year’s Babs (sorry Babs). But then, over a pre-lunch beer and quick fire round of Trivial Pursuit at the Tropical taverna, BB presented Rob with the …
