Dad’s Gone to Poland

Dad’s Gone to Poland

The Greek God(zilla) left for Poland in the early hours of yesterday morning.

He has gone to follow the Croatian football team at Euro 2012 – in a work capacity mind, not as a groupie.

This means that it’ll be just me and a toddler for at least the next 2-weeks, but he could potentially be away for as long as Croatia stay in the tournament.

There are obviously certain aspects to being home alone that I am looking forward to more than others.

It is always nice to be able to spread out in the bed, for example.

I will also probably quite enjoy preparing meals for one – cereal or crisps for dinner spring instantly to mind.

Then there is the opportunity to watch back-to-back episodes of Grey’s Anatomy when the toddler is in bed.

Sole custody of the laptop for blogging and tweeting and googling of True Blood spoilers.

Ahhhhh, silence.  Lovely.

But then I am cruelly jolted back to Earth when the realisation comes that there will be at least 14 consecutive wake-up calls between 5.45 and 6.05am.

At least 20 nursery drop-offs and pick-ups.

28 bedtime stories and 32 renditions of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

400 wees and poos.

5,000 baby wipes.

Negotiations for teeth brushing, lunch eating and sleep time.

Ignored instructions to take fingers out of nose/food/pants.

No sloping off for a cheeky glass of wine with friends.  No nipping out to the shop.  No telling myself I’ll definitely pop to the gym tonight/tomorrow/the weekend (even though I cancelled my membership months ago so could not anyway).

Two weeks will be fine.  I’ll just get on with it and probably really enjoy the one-on-one time.

But if Croatia do well in the group stages against Italy, Ireland and Spain, then the Greek God(zilla) might not be back in two weeks time.

He might have to stay in Poland until the job is finished.

If Croatia go as far as to make the final, he will be there until… July!

So, taking all of the above into account please take a moment now to commit this image of the Croatian football team to your memory.

Allow yourself to think for no longer than just a brief moment about how long the team have trained for this tournament and how many muscles have been pulled, injuries inflicted and blood, sweat and tears produced.

Then dismiss them quickly from your mind.

Don’t give more than a single thought to how proud the players and their families would feel if they were to actually get through the group stages and place in the competition.

And finally, try not to dwell too much on how it would feel for the underdogs to lift the trophy high above their heads and carry it home.

Instead, close your eyes and relax.

Visualise the photo above.

Then with all your might, mentally will them to be knocked out by 20th June.

Or else, it is really going to cause some serious childcare issues for me for the BiBs and BritMums Live!

Will you be watching Euro 2012?

Wow-it’s going to be a hard work but fun I’m sure. Reminds me of how hard my single mum friends have it solo x
