What’s in a name?

What’s in a name?

My husband, the Greek God(zilla), has many nicknames.   His full name, Panagiotis, requiring some effort to pronounce correctly.

To his old school friends, he is Pan-yotti.  His friends from University call him Yotes.  At the office, he is Pan.  To BB, it’s just P.

Yotes

The first Greek word that YiaYia taught me was Mourmoros, which is Grenglish speak for grumpy man.  She obviously thought that I’d need to use it one day.

To 4-year old Barney, he is Pam.  I’m not sure if Barney simply misheard or that he thinks he is a girl.  Either way, Barney’s parents have stopped correcting him, because it makes them laugh.

On holiday in Barbados a few years ago, a French-Canadian couple, pronounced his name as Pain.  Every morning by the pool it was, “Morning Pain”.  I might have tried to correct them… but it seemed rather apt.

But, by far the best name given to my husband was on the recent 7th XI cricket tour.  When ‘run out’ (cricket speak) by team bestie, Nick Rochford (ouch), the Greek God(zilla) threw his bat to the ground in fury and earned the name Pangry, for the rest of the tour.

Pangry

This cracked me up so much, that I amused myself for a whole hour just thinking up more words to ‘Pan-up’ and created my own little Panencyclopedia.

Pangry – an emotion expressed when everyday, harmless events are seemingly conspiring against you

Panecdote – a long story, usually involving the subject of cricket, that causes the listener to drift off to ones happy place

Panti-climax – I think this one speaks for itself, really

Panalyze – a tendency to examine trivial actions of others (van drivers, First Capital Connect staff) in minute detail in order to uncover a conspiracy against you

Pangelic – a facial expression used when consumed the last of Zachy’s breadsticks/juice/dinner/easter eggs

Pangst – a feeling that almost immediately follows Pangelic

Panimated – an expression most commonly used during F1/Masters/World Cup/Open/Ashes tournaments or after 3 pints of Bishops Finger

Pankle – opposite to cankle (Kate Moss, for example, could be said to have Pankles. I could not)

Panonymous – deeds you never admit to, but everyone knows is you

Panorexia – not eating after 10pm, or lying about it if you do

Pantagonist – to actively oppose everything your wife/mum/sister/friend/colleague says, just to be annoying

Panthem – GOLD, Spandau Ballet.  The Living Daylights, A-Ha.  Womanizer, Britney Spears.

And I wouldn’t have him any other way.

And then there’s probably the best name of all…

Daddy

From the get go Matt started calling me Sar Bear which at first I hated but he now calls Sadie – Sadie Cubs so I’m Mama Bear and Sadie is the baby cub – I kind of think it’s cute now. I call Matt either Matty Moo or Cutie Doodle which I love to say quite loudly if we’re out in public just to embarrass him! A few people in my life call me Sassy or Sas WHICH I LOVE and secretly wish more people would call me that rather than Sar or Sars and I also love being called Palmie – more so than ever now as I’ve taken a different surname so to be called by my maiden name these days makes me feel like I’m still Sarah Palmer even though I’m proud to be a Derrig. Make sense?????

Hysterical! Thank you for putting a big smile on my face this morning 🙂 When we were dating, my husband used to call me Sweet Melissa (from the Allman Brothers song). I loved it b/c he was the only one who called me Melissa – to everyone else I was (and am) Missy.

Now I call Kev ‘Sweets’. We started calling each other that after hearing about a friend of his parents who refers to his wife in the third person – “Sweets would like a cup of tea.” “Sweets is hungry.” “Sweets is ready to go now.” I don’t know why, but we found it hysterical! So now, we sound like a crazy old couple calling each other ‘sweets.’

Thanks again for a fab blog!

No room for “Panoply” – when he attempts DIY and puts up shelves?
or “Pandemonium” the evil spirits that overtook him when playing Risk at Uni?
“Panhellenic”… “Yes, I know he is.”
To answer the question: My wife is know as Fo, which I only rarely have to add an “e” to.

I don’t know what made me laugh more – ‘attempts DIY’ or ‘puts up shelves’…

What does your wife call you?
