Food & frolics!

I bet you are all dying to know whether my inner Domestic Greek Goddess was released the weekend of the Greek God(zilla)’s birthday?

Well, I completed all the dishes on the menu and that is the main thing.

If you recall, I was making beef & ale casserole, vegetable curry and macaroni cheese.

I cheated a bit with the vegetable curry, as the sauce was shop bought, so I just had to chuck a load of vegetables into a pot, stir in the sauce and leave it to simmer for a bit.

The beef & ale casserole required a tad more effort, but was a relatively simple recipe to follow (Ainsley Harriott) which involved more chucking of ingredients into a pot and then leaving it be for a few hours.  I am a big fan of this one pot cooking malarkey.

The mac & cheese was even easier and I have made it many times before so wasn’t stressing out too much about this one.

I had also committed to making not one, but three desserts.

A chocolate birthday cake, a cheesecake and cupcakes.

I cannot really take full credit for the cupcakes as I had a little bit of help.

Yiayia brought along a roast chicken with potatoes, spinach pie, Greek biscuits and houmous.

My sister, Angie, came with Aubergine Parmigiano, a bean salad and tons of booze (she can come again!).

Our house soon began to fill with family and friends.  Most people arrived clinking bottles of wine and beer.    There were kids crawling, toddling and running up and down the hallway.  The Greek God(zilla) did not once try to change my Christmas playlist.  The beef casserole was declared a triumph, Eva headed straight for her favourite mac & cheese, Uncle George had two slices of cheesecake and Yiayia said ‘Bravo’!

Even better (apart from seeing my husband so happy, of course) was that everyone had gone home by 7pm, leaving  me plenty of time to put Z to bed before settling down in front of the X-Factor final (Go Little Mix!).

I was washing up for 3 days after though.

What’s your favourite birthday dinner?

I’m very impressed and happy that it all went so well. You actually inspired me to volunteer to make Christmas dinner this year. Fortunately my other half declined my offer! I’m not sure that I am as brave as you 🙂
