Losing Balance

Tonight, I really do have to unpack the rest of my boxes from the move.  I can only find the left shoe of my everyday black  flats and my spring/summer clothes are screwed up in a black bin bag somewhere.  Yesterday, I bought Zachy 7-days worth of new t-shirts from Zara Baby, just because I couldn’t find the iron.

What I was supposed to be doing tonight was attending the East Dulwich WI April event – an Introduction to T’ai Chi.

At the beginning of the year, as part of my mission to make new local friends, I joined the East Dulwich WI.  Not least because the alternative was Dulwich Cricket Club, which does have some fine members, my husband being one of them, but the WI’s only requirement was that I was woman.

“Really, that’s all?” I asked the membership secretary, imagining a marriage certificate, personal references and an advanced diploma in jam making would need to be provided.  “Yes” she replied “that’s all”.  Score.

The first event I attended was a pub quiz (it’s not all about making your own bunting these days, you know…) where I was randomly allocated to a team who came in second… from last… but did meet some great women of all ages and backgrounds and had a really fab time.  So what if I didn’t correctly identify the Eiffel Tower in the picture round, I got all the Dolly Parton questions right.

The next WI event that I attended was learning the art of tea… but it was being held in the pub again, so I went along for the wine.

Not knowing T’ai Chi from a Chai Latte, I didn’t think I would feel so disappointed at having to sit this one out, but I have really enjoyed getting out of the house for a few hours each month and I’ve met some really interesting, fun people.

Besides, I’ll get more balance back in my life as soon as I find my other shoe.
