Wrong Side of the Bed

Wrong Side of the Bed

The Greek God(zilla) left for work this morning, leaving me with a list of jobs to do around the house on this wet Bank holiday Monday.

Unload the dishwasher, change the bed sheets, make a sausage cassoulet with the Cumberland chipolatas in the fridge and re-arrange our bedroom furniture.

You know, just the same list I gave to him at the start of the weekend but he did not get round to completing between football matches, trips to the sauna/pool and quick pints at Franklin’s en route to the dry cleaners.

After unloading the dishwasher and dirtying everything up again in a single toddler breakfast/lunch/dinner & snack cycle, I took Zachy upstairs to assist me in reclaiming my side of the bed back.

Since we first started sharing a bed together, I have always slept to the left of the Greek God(zilla).  It is the way it has always been.  We sleep this way in hotels, our parents houses and any other guest bed we happen to fall into.

But since we re-positioned our bed last year to make way for a new fitted wardrobe along one wall, we have both been sleeping on the wrong side of the bed.

The confusion started because the Greek God(zilla) likes to sleep closest to the bedroom door, in case an intruder breaks in and then he can protect us.

I do wonder whether an intruder who goes to such lengths as to break in through triple glazed windows, sneak up our creaky staircase and tease the lock on a couple of stairgates, is really going to be deterred by the sight of the Greek God(zilla) waving an old pair of M&S slippers at him/her, but anyway, he automatically took the side closest to the door, leaving me the space to his right.

We are completely out of sync this way.  We end up facing away from each other in sleep, instead of snuggled up close.  We  tend to unconsciously each stray over to our ‘true’ side of the bed during the night, leaving the other clinging bare knuckled to the edge of the mattress to stop from tipping out.

It did not take much persuading for the Greek God(zilla) to agree to swap back.  I think being closest to the door has it disadvantages when the only intruder thus far has been a 2½ year old at various intervals between 1am and 5am.

As soon as I reminded my husband of this, he was more than happy to swap.  As long as he did not have to do anything to facilitate the move, that is.

So while the Greek God(zilla) was at work today, I moved his books, his radio, his headphones, his bedside cabinet, his cricket magazines, his lamp, his pillows, his tissues, his water bottle and his PJs back over to his side of the bed, and I moved a pair of bed socks back over to mine.

I already feel that I am going to get a better nights sleep tonight, but most of all I cannot wait for us both to wake up on the right side of bed tomorrow morning.

Do you have to sleep on the same side of the bed every night or do you like to mix it up a bit?

Gosh, I’m finding myself nodding along in agreement with every post you write at the moment! Totally with you on this one – we are the opposite, I sleep on Y’s right – but it’s so important that we’re always that way round. If we’re not, we both sleep badly and feel conpletely out of synch.

It’s odd though, if he’s away overnight I have to shift over to his side in order to sleep well!

Hope the cassoulet turned out well 😉 xx

This made me laugh out loud! I also sleepon the left of Will wherever we are and anything else feels wrong! Even when he’s away or I’m in a bed on my own I have to stick to that side. Anything else feels wrong xx

You know, it’s bizarre… I really do have a “my side” of the bed and cannot sleep any other way! What creatures of habit we are!
