All I know about Fashion Week is what I’ve seen on Sex & the City, The Devil Wears Prada and The Rachel Zoe Project, where everyone who attends is perfectly tall, perfectly proportioned and perfectly groomed and/or appears in a reality tv show.
I have learned that the most important people are always front row at the shows and that you do not EVER sit in one of Kelly Cutrone’s seats. Like, EVER. Just don’t ok.
But, as to when this event occurs in the year or what designers will be there, well that detail just passes me by. I do not have a clue.
I am not a fashionista. I wear leggings almost every day because my old jeans fit my old body and I cannot bear do not wish to size up.
My only criteria when shopping for clothes these days is:
- Does it fit?
- Does it go with leggings?
Yet here I am writing about Fashion Week, during Fashion Week… well, that is because my dear friend (& über stylist) Courtenay, who you may remember wrote a guest post for Grenglish called ‘Yummy Mummy – The How to Guide’, does know all about these things.
Earlier this week she was photographed during NY Fashion Week by Marie Claire as part of their New York Fashion Week Street Style S/S 2012 feature. How amazeballs is that?!
She was snapped just standing outside one of the shows. You know, it happens to me all the time…
This would NEVER happen to me. If I was to stand outside one of the shows during London Fashion Week, it would be more than just the fashion police asking me to move on. So out of place I would look, I am sure I would be arrested for defacing the model scenery in my leggings and ballet flats.
Don’t get me wrong, I love to buy clothes. And shoes. And bags. And accessories, oh accessories… and I have heard of most of the really famous designers, but I do not live and breathe this world. I can’t remember the last fashion magazine I read and have certainly never been to a catwalk fashion show. I would not know what to wear, for a start!
I remember one time back in 2008, when Courtenay happened to be in town during London Fashion Week and invited me to a party with her at Bungalow 8. Obviously, the fact that it was fashion week had passed me by, so I rocked up to her hotel completely oblivious to where we were heading. It was only when I saw crowds of gorgeous people smoking outside the swish St Martin’s Lane Hotel that I thought to ask:
“Whose party is this anyway?’
‘It’s the Dior party for Fashion Week’ she replied breezily as she lead me to the front of the line where we were promptly ushered inside.
I am sure I was not dressed appropriately. I am sure I looked like I did not belong there. But you see, the most beautiful thing about Courtenay is in that as much as she loves fashion and all it’s trimmings, she loves her friends more.
In the 9 years or so that we have known each other, she has taken me to some pretty cool places and introduced me to some pretty cool people, but has never once asked me to take off my M&S jacket or looked embarrassed when I removed my high street flats.
She is most happy when she has her girls by her side laughing, drinking… maybe even a bit of shoulder dancing and really couldn’t give a crap if they are ‘on trend’ or not.
Courtenay only ever sees the best in people (we joke about her rose-tinted view sometimes) and is the most chilled out person you will ever meet. This is probably why people love working with her and why the success and attention she is enjoying now could not be more deserved.
I shared the Marie Claire link on Facebook and another friend commented Great outfit! Next year can she sneak us in?
To which, Courtenay responded All you need to do is get to NYC and we will find a way in xo
And she would too.
What are your fashion highs and lows?
And you know I’m going to hold Courtenay to that as well! Lovely post! And I live in leggings as well! xoxo

Thank you! What a lovely thing to say 🙂
I sat next to Kelly Cutrone at the last Fashion Week I went to before baby was born!!! She looked moody and was wearing all black, too.
I sooo don’t fit into that world any more, so much so that I may have gone full circle and I’m so uncool that I’m cool?

Alice you are such a dark glamour horse!! Fashion Week next to Kelly Cutrone is so cool – were you in The City too? xx

Thanks! Although you are slightly biased on the subject matter 😉
Great post – your friend sounds brilliant! I will never be high fashion as I am too committed to comfort these days over style… still trying to find a way to combine the two…. x

I am quite comfortable with my ‘look’ but it is not in any way high fashion – definitely more comfort too!
Aw I think you look perfect! Your friend looks incredible, but that’s not normal, and not possible when you only have 5 minutes a day to spend on yourself!

5 minutes is a good day! Thank you but I wasn’t fishing, honestly 😉
