I Wore This and Thought of You

I Wore This and Thought of You

There are some items in my wardrobe that I will never ever throw out.  No matter how badly they may fit, how tatty they may look, or how unfashionable they may be.

My ‘Australia’ jeans.  They are a 28 waist, bootleg, hipster jean. I can say with quite some confidence that I will NEVER wear them again.  Even if I could squeeze even one of my thighs into them, the fact that my post c-section belly would hang over the top of the low-rise waistline makes them a style no-go.  These jeans have not been worn for over 14-years, yet they are still stored in with my current collection.  We have a tight bond those jeans and I.  They represent the last time I felt thin and I am not ready to let that go.

My ‘First Date’ dress.  It is a green maxi dress from Top Shop that I wore on my very first date with the Greek God(zilla).  I have worn it a couple of times since then, but tend not to anymore as it feels too special to wear on just any old day now.  That, and it also feels a bit more snug than it used to.

Every handbag I have ever owned.  They have their own wardrobe and are organised by style. Clutches sit together next to crossover bags, while totes have a whole shelf to themselves. The Greek God(zilla) pulled the strap off the first Mulberry bag I ever received, rendering it completely useless. But, I keep it as a reminder of the life I used to live and you never know, I may even get around to repairing the strap one of these days.

A Cynthia Rowley tunic dress that I bought in the sale with the intention of slimming into it.  FOUR YEARS AGO.  I still have 10lbs to go.  I will always have at least 10lbs to go.

On my wedding day, I wore a beautiful lace wrap dress by Australian designer, Lover.  There will never be an occasion to wear it again.  I have thought about selling it and buying new furniture for the house with the proceeds; or dying it a darker colour so perhaps I could wear it again to a fancy dinner or party (because invites to those come flooding through the door, NOT), but deep down I know the dress is destined to remain in a garment bag in the loft forevermore.

I have a pair of maternity leggings that are made from the softest, most comfortable material to have ever graced my legs.  I come home to those leggings.  After a long day, I will look forward to kicking off my shoes, taking off my jeans and slipping them on.  I sleep in them.  I curl up on the sofa and watch Eastenders in them.  Did I mention that I LOVE them?

I love them all.

I love this post. I had similar thoughts recently when doing a clear out. There were some items that I just couldn’t part with – like you, a pair of 28″ jeans that held memories and some French Connection tops I used to wear aged 23 (such an expensive treat back then) while skipping in and out of trendy bars in Soho. It’s amazing the memories that clothes hold, isn’t it?

I also have a few tops that I don’t wear but they were expensive so I keep them. Wonder how many of the same Soho bars we skipped in and out of at the same time…

I hear you! I had loads of clothes that I was sure I was going to wear again…but never did. Last week I decided to have a clear out – best thing I ever did! And I found clothes I had forgotten about!
