Flashback Friday

Flashback Friday

When the Greek God(zilla) and I first got together, I was living with my sister in a lovely garden flat in Maida Vale.

There is lots to like about Maida Vale.  It’s distance to Selfridges being the most significant advantage, natch.  Then there is breakfast at Vicki’s, if you can get a table; drinks at The Waterway in the summer or at The Prince Alfred in the winter; Sunday roasts at The Bridge House and pizza at Le Cochonnet; walks along the canal and strolls in Paddington Rec.

I love(d) Maida Vale.

I had not been seeing the Greek God(zilla) for very long, perhaps a few months or so.  One Tuesday afternoon, we met at Baker St tube station after work and walked back to mine through Regents Park.  It was an absolutely beautiful day, so we stopped at La Cochonnet on the way home, which was conveniently located at the top of my road, for a bite to eat and a bottle of rose in the sunshine.

These were the days when our time was still our own and thoughts did not immediately turn to:

1. who was driving
2. who was picking Zachy up
3. how long we had before the babysitter needed to leave
4. if we could deal with the hangover in the morning

Looking back now, I realise that we did not fully appreciate the carefree existence that we had then.

We walked home in a pink wine daze and feeling a bit merry, decided to open another bottle when we got back to the flat and popped The Police Greatest Hits in the CD player (these were my pre-ipod days).

Before long, we were strumming air guitar on the bed and lip syncing into a hairbrush (me) and a deoderant bottle (him).  We took it turns to ‘sing’ lead vocals & play lead guitar, while the other provided back up in the form of bad dancing and air drums.  We had so much fun just being silly and cracking ourselves up laughing.  After what felt like hours, we declared our impromtu concert to be over and collapsed on the bed in a drunk, happy, exhausted heap.

Our thoughts turned briefly to work as we assumed we’d have to be up again in a few hours time.

‘What time is it anyway? Better set the alarm.’ I said to the Greek God(zilla) who was already squinting at the screen on his mobile phone.

Finally, just as we felt our heads hit the pillow, he replied ‘It’s 9.30pm’ before we both passed out.

What a pair of lightweights!
