It was around 5am this morning when I first heard my name being called.
At first it was just a gentle whimper but the longer I ignored it, the more insistent the voice became until finally it boomed ‘MUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMY!!!!’
I pulled back the duvet, tiptoed out of bed and found Zachy waiting for me on the other side of the stairgate to his bedroom, bleary eyed and holding his arms up to mine.
Without speaking a word, I lifted him over the gate and carried him back into my own bed. I climbed in beside him and settled my head down on the pillow for another doze.
“I want Bear and Piggle and Ben Elf and Bunny’ said Zachy.
I tried to look like I was sleeping peacefully.
The Greek God(zilla) was doing quite a good job of that too.
‘I WANT BEAR AND PIGGLE AND BEN ELF AND BUNNY!’
So I got up again and tiptoed back to Zachy’s room, collected Bear, Igglepiggle, Ben Elf & Bunny from his bed and then returned with them to mine.
I tucked them all up under the duvet together and squeezed in next to them.
My head was half on the pillow, half on Bear.
My bottom was half in the bed, half hanging over the edge of it.
My feet were cold.
‘I want a smoothie, Mummy’
With that he kicked off the covers and threw himself over to the other side of the bed. Here we go…
‘Wake up, Mummy’ as his little fingers prodded my arm.
I inched further into the bed until the whole of my bottom finally made contact again with the mattress.
‘I want the dinosaur book, Mummy’
It’s in your room, Zachy. Why don’t you go and read it in there?
I closed my eyes again.
The room was quiet for a second or two. I could just about make out the sound of the Greek God(zilla) pretending to be asleep next to me.
‘Mummy’ he said ‘I want to do a poo’
The words I had waited to hear for two days. The one thing he knew I wanted more than anything else. The one thing he knew was sure to get me out of bed and follow him. The one request I could not ignore.
I sighed. Come on then.
I took the potty, positioned it in the middle of the hallway and signalled for Zachy to sit down.
‘I don’t want to do a poo, Mummy. Read my dinosaur book’
How do you like to wake up the morning?
