Learning to Ride a Bike

Learning to Ride a Bike

A bike, especially your first ever bike, is something you will remember forever.

It represents a coming of age; a right of passage; and signifies the moment you stop being a baby and become a bona-fide boy or girl.

We decided that for our son’s 4th birthday, in the year in which he would also start school, we would give him a bike.

A grown-up present for our grown-up little boy… *sobs*

As he is pretty superhero obsessed at the moment, we went for a Spiderman themed bike and matching helmet.

The bike came fully assembled, but I think they assumed that we would be able to work out the helmet all by ourselves.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

We could not work the helmet out by ourselves.  Or together.  We both stood there, two fully fledged adults in our 40’s, fiddling with that Spiderman helmet for 20-minutes or so, trying to fit different variations of it onto our child’s head before permitting him to pedal off.

At one moment, I saw the Greek God(zilla) pull the same face he usually reserves for SatNav Man.

Other children whizzed past us, while their parents looked on bemused.

“I think it’s on backwards” I offered helpfully as the helmet slipped off from our son’s head again.

That is the point at which he threw it at me.

Eventually, I sorted it out.

I mean, come on, how hard could it really be…

REALLY HARD.

But once I worked out which way round it should be worn, and that the little bit inside the helmet was to adjust around his head and not underneath his chin, the actual strap bit was pretty straightforward.

Then he was off.

As easy as, well, riding a bike.
