Nothing But The Tooth

Nothing But The Tooth

A couple of weeks ago, Zachy tripped over at nursery while running around and chasing his friends in the garden.

His gum looked a bit red and sore, but as it did not seem to be causing him much discomfort we gave it a day to see how it settled.

The next day, the redness was gone and he did not seem to flinch when I took a toothbrush to it, so we just put it down to one of those little tumbles and thought no more of it.

Last week, I noticed that the same tooth was looking slightly darker than the others and had taken on a rather greyish hue.

I mentioned this to his nursery and they reassured me that they see it all the time with kids after a knock and the lovely white colour should return back to said tooth very soon.

I booked him in to see the dentist anyway.

His dentist is lovely.  He saw her for the first time 6-months ago and she made him feel very relaxed and at ease.

This time, he did not even want to sit on my lap while she examined him.

He just hopped up on the chair, went for ride up & down and reclined back in the seat when he was asked, so that she could take a proper look.

He sat patiently in the chair and did not make any fuss at all while she prodded around.

If only he was always this well-behaved and polite when I try to get him to sit still at home…

Finally, she lowered the chair down and he climbed off and skipped happily into my arms.

‘Unfortunately, the nerve is dead’ she explained ‘and the tooth is unlikely to change back to its original colour until his new one comes through’

When he is 7.

That’s in 4 years time.

Four years of having a grey toothy grin.

Four years of school photos.

Four years of family pics.

Four years of blog posts.

‘Best not to tell him that though’ she said ‘Don’t want to give him a complex’

My poor boy.

The good news is that there was no other damage caused to the gum and his teeth are all nicely spaced out and very clean (her words!).

So, it is just cosmetic.

Phew!

And, I do think he can carry it off – don’t you?

He is still beautiful and as a baby I banged my tooth on the cot under a babysitter’s care and tooth had to removed and for 7 years I had a gap there. Still looked adorable looking back at the pics though! Hehe x

He’s just lovely. At a similar stage my middle boy fell over and broke one of his front teeth. The dentist just took it out so he was gappy for years and years – he doesn’t seem emotionally scarred by it now!

My daughter did exactly the same a year ago. I googled it in the end and as she had no pain, we didn’t take her to the dentist. a year on and the greyness has lightened and isn’t very noticeable now. sometimes the nerve reattaches and it corrects itself.

fingers crossed. Am reassured by all the comments of similiar things happening – must be more common that I realised.

Oh bless – his little pearly grey – at least it’s his first set of teeth, isn’t he a beauty? Four years of blog posts – now that made me laugh!

Poor guy! But at least it will fall out and make way for his adult teeth! My eldest chipped one of her adult teeth just after it had come in. And the dentist did a great job of fixing it. Did make me consider making her wear a gum shield every time she played at the playground to protect the rest of the teeth (I’m joking obviously). And he looks gorgeous. Can’t wait to see pictures of him when he has that toothless grin when they start falling out 🙂

      Hehehe thank you.
Dentist said if he had done this to adult teeth, the treatment would be equivalent to root canal! OUCH.

My son fell over when getting out of the buggy and did the same thing (with a lot of blood involved from the tooth – I was sure it was going to fall out) and he’s has gone lighter since, although it is still a little grey. Our dentist said it wouldn’t be possible to tell straightaway if the nerve was damaged because initially the area would be bruised. You might be lucky, it might fade. If not he still looks very cute. x

Oh dear poor Z! Still, at least he’s not in any pain and he can definitely carry off the look! I totally love that first pic of him in particular, so cheeky looking. We need to marry off your boy and my girl together in 20 years time, they’d be the cutest pair! xx

Thanks for your lovely comment on my blog; subscribed to you too and hope to get to know you in anticipation of the ceremony – really looking forward to it!!
I’ve never heard of a nerve in a tooth dying but I think it probably looks far worse to you than it really is. Doesn’t look too bad in that pic. Xxx
