A New Role

A New Role

One of the biggest changes I have noticed since quitting my job to spend more time at home, is how much more there is to do around the house.

For example, despite emptying the laundry basket a couple of times a week, it is still ALWAYS full.  Are we all wearing more clothes now that I am at home during the day? If anything this should create less washing, as some days I just throw on whatever I was wearing the day before.  When I worked in an office, it was unthinkable to wear the same outfit twice in one month, let alone in the same week.

The dishwasher ALWAYS needs loading or unloading.  Yet, the only extra meal I am preparing during the day is for my lunch, and I mostly just pick at things straight from the fridge.  This once led the Greek God(zilla) to predict that I will weigh 25-stone by Christmas.

Ever the charmer 😉

I am ALWAYS treading on stray cars, dinosaurs, or bits of Lego.  Do I just notice this more now, or have they always been there?

The bed ALWAYS needs making.  I get up in the morning and I make the bed.  Zee jumps up and down on the bed before school, so I remake the bed.  Again, after the Greek God(zilla) comes home from work and has had a little lie down.  Once more after bath time, when we all climb in to keep warm.

Food ALWAYS needs preparing.  If I am not sorting breakfast, I am making dinner.  Or shopping for dinner.   Or cleaning up after dinner.  Or recycling leftovers from dinner.  Or loading the dishwasher AGAIN.

But it is just me at home during the day.  We are wearing the same amount of clothes, eating the same amount of food (I am probably even eating less now I am at home than I did when I had M&S on my doorstep) and toys are still only being played with at the beginning and at the end of every single day.

Also… *whispers* I still have a cleaner.

Then came the moment of realisation.

Duh.

There is not actually too much more to do around the house than there was before.  A bit sure, but not loads.

The difference is that now, I am the only one doing it.

The Greek God(zilla) seems to have forgotten all of his previous training, and has decided that if he is going to keep a wife at home, then he may as well use one.

Socks that were once deposited neatly in the laundry basket at the end of the day, are now just left strewn over the bedroom floor.

Plates that were rinsed and stacked in the dishwasher, are now just left by the sink and some days they do not even make it that far.

Laundry that was previously sorted and put into the machine, is now left as a special treat for me to find at the end of a long day.

Dishwasher? What dishwasher?

There are also some new phrases that have entered into his vocabulary.

Some of my personal favourites are What’s for dinner?, Have you washed my white/blue/green t-shirt?  and  How much did you spend in Sainsbury’s, love? as he cracks open a beer and switches over to Sky Sports.

It is like I have stepped back into an episode of Mad Men, only without the well-groomed hair and conical bras.

Although weirdly, for the time being at least, it seems to be working for us.

Oh yes. I suspect the same thing would happen here. It’s already a bit like that and I do work – only from home so that’s not proper, right?

Welcome to the world of stay at home mum…exactly the same in our house although I have to hold my hands up to still not cooking all the meals!! With washing if I don’t do one a day I have a nervous breakdown at the end of the week with the sheer volume of it all…
