Honkopoly – A Dry Run

Honkopoly – A Dry Run

Honk whaaaaaaaaat?

No, I haven’t gone completely mad.  Well, maybe just a little bit.  But it’s all for a BRILLIANT cause, so do read on and I will explain everything.

Honkopoly is the name we have given to the London leg of a national fundraising event for Sport Relief, which is being organised by the social media phenomenon, Team Honk.

Team Honk was founded in 2012 by bloggers’ Annie Spratt Mammasaurus, Tanya Barrow Mummy Barrow and Penny Alexander Alexander Residence, when they asked Comic Relief if they needed bloggers to get involved in fundraising.  Whilst coming up with their finalised ideas, Comic Relief invited them to travel to Ghana to help live blog and tweet the charity’s 25th birthday celebrations and record the #GoodWork that fundraising had done.  While in Ghana #teamhonk trended on Twitter several times, thanks to the hundreds of tweeters who came on board to share blog posts and tweets.

Knowing that bloggers were keen to fundraise and raise awareness, Team Honk decided to come up with a major fund-raiser for Sport Relief 2014 and the #teamhonkrelay was born.

From Sunday 12 January – Sunday 23 March, over 250 bloggers from across the country will come together as Team Honk to take part in a baton relay from Land’s End to John O’Groats.  Between them, they will cover over 3,000 miles and hope to raise £20,000 for Sport Relief to help change lives at home and abroad.

The baton arrives in London from the St. Albans team on Tuesday 4th February, and the following day it will take a Monopoly themed route to its next handover in Fleet, Hampshire.

As one-third of the London organising committee along with Vanessa HPMcQ and Sophie Franglaise Mummy, we have spent the last few weeks mapping out a route of London that extends 15-miles, most of which we will cover on foot.

Dressed in Monopoly themed Sport Relief outfits, ‘Honkopoly’ will aim to hit every colour on the Monopoly board; as well as making a few extra iconic stops along the way including a pit stop at Comic Relief HQ.

Our muscles will ache, our feet will blister and there will be many times when we will want to stop and rest our weary legs for 20-minutes.

I know this, because last week we completed a dry run of the route and it was much more physically demanding than we anticipated.  I’ll have a supply of plasters and ibuprofen on me when we do it for real.

On the actual day, there will be over 25 bloggers walking for 7-hours straight, with only a few short comfort breaks scheduled in.

This is the route we will be covering:

  • Vauxhall station to Comic Relief HQ
  • Comic Relief HQ to Victoria
  • Victoria to Pall Mall
  • Pall Mall to Piccadilly
  • Piccadilly to Park Lane
  • Park Lane to Oxford Street
  • Oxford Street to Marylebone station
  • Marylebone station to Euston Road
  • Euston Road to Kings Cross
  • Kings Cross to Liverpool Street (by bus)
  • Liverpool Street to Whitechapel
  • Whitechapel to Vine Street
  • Vine Street to the Tower of London
  • Tower of London to Fenchurch Street
  • Fenchurch Street to Bank
  • Bank to Trafalgar Square (by bus)
  • Trafalgar Square to Lambeth North
  • Lambeth North to Waterloo where the baton travels by train to the team in Fleet, Hampshire

Come and cheer us on if you will be near any of these areas on Wednesday 5th February.  I will be the one wearing a Sport Relief ONESIE and a Monopoly Top Hat.  Others will be accessorised with Monopoly money, tokens and cards.

Oh and there will also be a camera following us every step of the way, so we won’t be able to slow down, disrobe, or jump in a taxi without you all knowing about it.

Our goal is to raise £20,000 across the UK, which is £500 per regional team, and we would LOVE the London team to smash that target so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do sponsor us here and leave us a lovely little message of support.

Even if you can spare just £1 , that is enough to provide a hot meal for a child in the UK living in extreme poverty.

Or, you can support us on social media by following the #teamhonkrelay and #honkopoly hashtags on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

HONK! HONK!
