Blogging: the story so far…

Blogging: the story so far…

My first blog post was 3-months ago.   Back then, I had absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into.  3-months ago, I certainly did not know what a mummy blogger was.  I did not know about RSS feeds or widgets and I was blissfully unaware of site stats and comments.

I did have a twitter account but had tweeted twice and my only followers were family members and @kerrymg.  I was a working mum and wife and got all my social media kicks on Facebook.

It was The PR Geek who first suggested to me that I start writing a blog.  Now, I already knew about blogs, but I had only read two – St.Murphy and Lady Sadie’s Emporium, both written by friends who had posted links to their blogs on Facebook.  Whilst I loved reading both blogs, I didn’t consider writing one of my own.

These two friends in particular are naturally very witty, very engaging and very clever.  They also do a great Moulin Rouge medley…

I just wasn’t sure I was quite that fabulous enough to write a blog that anyone would find quite that fabulous enough to read.

For inspiration, The PR Geek sent me a link to Richmond Mummy, a brilliant mummy blog from bump to beyond.  Richmond Mummy writes about adjusting to life with a  little one in Richmond, obviously.

It was then that I discovered that a whole army of mummy bloggers existed!  I spent the first few weeks reading as many blogs as I could, from the sweet and the serious to the absolutely hilarious.

The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to give it a go.  Then, one rainy Friday afternoon with The PR Geek and Grenglish was born.

My first post was nerve-wracking.  It took me 3 days to publish it and another 2 to publicise it.  I wasn’t actually sure that I would even ‘put it out there’ into the blogosphere, but when I sent the link to St.Murphy and Lady Sadie for their professional feedback, they both posted it immediately to their Facebook & Twitter pages and the decision to go public with my blog was taken completely out of my hands… for which I will be forever thankful!  If they hadn’t done this, I’m not sure I would have had the courage to do so myself.

So, 3-months on this is where I am now:

  • I have a published blog, of which I am quite proud
  • I post 2-3 times a week
  • I have now met Richmond Mummy in the flesh AND she is FAB.
  • I am following other blogs, properly subscribing, not just dipping in if the links are sent to me
  • I am going to Cybermummy next week, my first blogger event
  • I have a new online support of bloggers, tweeters and mums
  • I have over 400 followers on Twitter (I’m not bragging, I’m just amazed!)
  • I have tweeted 789 times!  About toddler tantrums and wine o’clock mainly.

At times, I feel overwhelmed by how much I still have to learn about being a blogger.  Most weeks, I can’t think of anything to write about.  I am still not sure what my blog is really about, what I am trying to say, or if I have found my true voice yet.  I also know that I am not getting as much as I can out of wordpress (the wordpress workshop at Cybermummy should help with that!) but I do know that at 3-months in, that is ok.  I am writing, I am publishing what I am writing and 3-months ago, I didn’t have this whole new exciting world before me.

I love the honesty in your blogs – if you hadn’t have revealed the ‘3 month thing’, I would have thought you’d been blogging for years. You’re a natural! By the way I didn’t know about the Cyber Mummy event, must look into that. Keep up the great blogging…

Well done Smudge!! I’m so proud of you. You have such an amazing talent with your writing. I get excited every time I see you have posted a new entry. I think your blog is witty, charming, real-life and most importantly heartfelt. Having not seen you in the flesh for 10 years now, reading your blog now gives me an insight into the woman you are now and the AMAZING mother you have become. I hope it’s not another 10 years between drinks, I know it won’t be! But until that day when we meet again I will continue to read your blog and love every word you write!

I love reading your blog and am very flattered that my blog was introduced to you when starting out – as someone who is new to blogging myself, I share your nervousness in putting stuff “out there” but am enjoying it all the same. I have neglected my blog lately, life has gotten in the way, for which I feel bad, but am back on it tonight and very much looking forward to CyberMummy. So pleased to have met you and looking forward to seeing you again this saturday xx
